Owen Hargreaves has written off Liverpool's chances of lifting the Premier League title this season.

The Manchester United midfielder has delivered a stinging criticism of the Reds' challenge after another disappointing campaign at Anfield.

Liverpool had been tipped to win their first league title since 1990 after a summer of heavy spending, but Monday night's 2-2 draw with Aston Villa leaves the Reds 14 points behind their Lancashire rivals United at the top of the table.

Anfield is currently under a cloud of uncertainty as a much publicised bust up between club owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett and manager Rafa Benitez is combined with ongoing talk on Merseyside of a new takeover.

And Hargreaves has now produced a knock-out blow to Liverpool's title tilt and feels the race for the top flight's silverware is between United, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Massive gap

"I looked at the Premier League table on Saturday evening and Liverpool were 15 points behind us," Hargreaves told The Sun.

"I know they had a couple of games in hand but that is still a massive gap for them to close at this stage of the season.

"So it looks to me as though it's going to be a three-horse race between United, Arsenal and Chelsea.

"Chelsea have done really well to hang in during a tough period when they have changed their manager and they are still contenders.

"But I can't see anyone beyond the current top three as title winners and hopefully in May we'll still be on top and looking down on everyone else."
