Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has admitted that his side's good early season form has got him dreaming of lifting the Premier League title come May.

Rafa Benitez's side sit second in the table, level on points with leaders Chelsea and eight points ahead of Manchester United, although the reigning champions have a game in hand.

In recent seasons Benitez's men have seen their title challenge fall short after losing crucial games against the big four, but this season has seen the Reds defeat both Manchester United and Chelsea, ending their 86-game unbeaten run at home.

But Gerrard - who misses England's friendly against Germany on Wednesday through injury - knows that there is a long way to go before the league is decided.

He told Champions magazine: "It's nice but it raises expectations. It's important to stay humble. We know we're a good team, we know we're getting closer to a title challenge, we can say that.

"But we've got to prove we can stay in the race to the end.

"I can understand why people are saying it. We've gone down a couple of times by goals, we haven't given up and we've managed to turn games around.

"So now they're saying we've got title credentials."

The 28-year-old has supported the club all his life and knows what it would mean to the fans if Liverpool went on to win their first league title in 18 years.

Having spent his entire career at Anfield, Gerrard has grown accustomed to the pressure that surrounds the club and the intense demand for success.

He added: "It's Liverpool Football Club. You've got to expect that and deal with it. Every single game we play there is pressure to win.

"I've lived with it since I broke into the first team. But even more so now because the wait for the bread and butter is getting longer."
