Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva has thanked his manager Rafa Benitez for helping him to silence his Anfield boo-boys.

The young Brazilian was the subject of criticism from some supporters earlier this season following a series of under-par displays.

However, in recent weeks the talented schemer has started to show his true ability and won over a number of his detractors.

Benitez has always been unequivocal in his support of a player he brought to the club from Gremio in 2007; backing which has not gone unappreciated by Lucas.

"I'm pleased with my performances. I'm getting more minutes on the pitch and making good use of it," he told The Sun.

"But I have to thank the confidence my manager has in me for that."

With Liverpool heading into the New Year at the Premier League summit Lucas is in confident mood with regards the rest of the campaign.

And it is such confidence that has led the South American to offer his view that Liverpool will finish the season as champions.

"I don't see Chelsea or Manchester United having the same potential as us this year."
