Shrewsbury boss Paul Simpson has agreed to 'take a look' at trialist Ramon Calliste before deciding whether to sign the former Manchester United and Liverpool striker.

Calliste is set to train with the League Two outfit in a bid to impress Simpson, who is looking for some bargains in the January transfer window.

The Welshman was released by United in 2005 after failing to make an impact and was signed by Liverpool, but the 23-year-old did not live up to expectations at Anfield.

Simpson, though, is prepared to offer Calliste the opportunity to demonstrate his ability and could give him the chance to play in Shrewsbury's reserves.

Speculation

He told the club's official website: "I've agreed to take a look at him (Calliste) over the next couple of days in training. If I think we need to have a further look then I may play him in the reserves."

Meanwhile, the absence of Ben Davies against Bradford fuelled speculation that Shrewsbury's captain has been the subject of a bid from another club.

But Simpson added: "Ben was left out because I felt it was the right thing to do for that particular game.

"You can never be 100 per cent sure in football but I'm sure that Ben will play for us very soon and will be with us until the end of the season and then hopefully for even longer.

"We've had no bids for any of our players and I haven't even had enquiries to take players away on loan."
