Liverpool defender Philipp Degen faces a new spell on the sidelines through injury.

The Swiss international has endured a nightmare start to his Anfield career due to a series of injuries following his arrival on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund last summer.

The 24-year-old had only recently returned to fitness from a metatarsal injury he picked up in the Carling Cup defeat by Tottenham in November.

Degen sustained a new foot injury in last week's reserves clash with Manchester United.

Scans have revealed no break to the metatarsal, but the full-back still faces up to a month on the sidelines.
