Alonso: Missing link
Xabi Alonso insists his summer switch to Real Madrid is not responsible for Liverpool's slow start to the new season.
The Spain midfielder returned to his homeland earlier this month after five years at Anfield.
His departure is already being felt on Merseyside, with Liverpool having lost two of their opening three Premier League fixtures this term.
Alonso's absence is regarded as a key factor behind the Reds' failings, as he was regarded as the link between midfield and attack which has been so glaringly absent in recent games.
Rafa Benitez did move to find a replacement when he splashed out on Italy international Alberto Aquilani, but the big-money arrival from Roma is still some six weeks away from regaining full fitness.
Alonso, who is currently preparing for the start of the new Primera Liga season, admits Liverpool's troubles have surprised him, but he is convinced that they will cope without his services over the course of the entire 2009/10 campaign.
"Liverpool's bad beginning in three matches is not normal but I believe my exit has not been that decisive," he told The Sun.
"Players are not that indispensable and these are only the first moments of the season. I am convinced the team will recover."

Mike Morrison, what a plum, grow up and keep your biased opinions to yourself. We beat Man U 4-1 at Old Trafford without Alonso, and we'll do it again. If you read that much into the first three games of the season, I hope you put money on it because you will lose. Naivity is not a virtue.
