Jamie Carragher believes success over arch-rivals Manchester United this weekend could revive Liverpool's flagging season.

The Reds' campaign went from bad to worse on Tuesday following an injury-time defeat at Anfield to Lyon the UEFA Champions League.

The loss leaves Rafa Benitez's side with an uphill struggle to qualify past the group stage while their Premier League campaign is also on the ropes.

Last weekend's controversial loss to Sunderland was their fourth in nine games and defeat to The Red Devils at Anfield would almost certainly extend their title drought.

However, while Liverpool's short-term outlook looks bleak, veteran defender Carragher believes a surprise success over in-form Manchester United could be just the tonic they need.

Boost

"Beating United could be just the boost we need. We always bounce back because that's what we are about," explained Carragher.

"We've got a lot of fight and character and will want to show that against United, particularly after what happened against Lyon.

"We're going through a tough patch but we've been through them before and we'll bounce back, there's no doubt about that.

"It's always a great game against United, and that could be what we need. If we win, it'll give everyone a massive lift."

Same players

Fabio Aurelio, who replaced the injured Steven Gerrard in midweek, insists Liverpool still have the quality to impress and it is just a matter of restoring some much-needed confidence.

"We are the same players who did a good campaign last season, so we have to try to bring the strengths of then to this year," said Aurelio.

"Football is mostly confidence. If the team is winning you have lots and players try different things and you know that things will happen in your favour.

"At the moment, that's not happening."
