The Premier League has revealed clubs paid £70.6million to agents from October 2008 to September 2009.

It is the first time payments to agents involving Premier League clubs have been disclosed and covers the last two transfer windows.

Not surprisingly big-spenders Manchester City top the list having spent over £12million to agents after bringing in the likes of Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor, Joleon Lescott, Gareth Barry and Roque Santa Cruz in the summer.

Chelsea are the next biggest spenders forking out over £9.5million to agents.

Liverpool were third on £6.7million with Tottenham next in the list spending £6.1million.

Reigning champions Manchester United only spent just over £1.5million to agents in the same time period.

Premier League new boys Burnley spent the least of the 20 clubs, laying out just £468,000 in agent fees.

The FA welcomed the publication of the fees paid to agents.

An FA spokesperson said: "We are pleased that, through these new requirements, clubs are bringing greater transparency to the domestic transfer market.

"For the first time, there will be a game-wide picture of the level of spending on agents. The leagues and other key stakeholders have been fully supportive, following the example set by the Football League with its publication of Agents' Fees over the last few years."

Players don't have to be represented by an agent, they can request representation from the FA. I imagine the reason the players choose to use agents is because they know that they will get larger signing on fees and wages as the agent will push for these because his money is reliant on it. The FA would only push for a deal that is fair for the player as they probably don't stand to gain anything financially.

i have no problem with football players using agents but the greedy players themselves should pay the agents commission not the clubs

I think if you devided the amount of footballers who transferred last year by the amount reported, I dont think its that big a deal. I also doubt a footballer would be able to negotiate they wages they currently earn and teh clauses that go with it. For a player to feel he is being looked after by someone who has to organise their future wealth and look after them on a day to day basis, its a fair amount. I hate the whinging fans who react to this but dont think it through. If someone gets a few bob out of it then so what.

Quite agree with Howard Ballard. Agents are working(?) on behalf of the player, not the club. If the player wishes to negotiate his contract via an agent, they should pay for it themselves. It's not as though they are on minimum wage is it and unable to afford it!!

Im in the wrong job!!! It sickens me to see all this money going to a few people from the top flight when it could be so much better spent on youth and grass roots football. Unfortunately it will take ALL clubs to refuse to use agents for the situation to change and that will never happen as I suspect the bigger clubs will worry that they will miss out on playersif they dont.

Why do the clubs pay have to pay these fees, I feel the club should only pay for the player and if the player has an agent it's up to him to pay and if this is so, see how little the agents would be paid

It is about time we all got to see some of these figures clubs are spending on agents fees. I welcome further disclosure of clubs spending and finances since ultimatley it is the fans money gernerated through gate reciepts that enable these clubs to stay in buisness and make their millions.
