Liverpool are planning a shock move for Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp, Sky Sports sources understand.

The Anfield outfit are searching for a new man at the helm after Rafa Benitez's six-year reign was brought to an end by mutual consent on Thursday.

And Spurs boss Redknapp has emerged as a leading contender for the Reds hierarchy as they aim to bring stability back to Merseyside.

Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish and managing director Christian Purslow have been charged with the task of identifying and selecting a replacement.

Dalglish knows Redknapp well having brought his son Jamie to Anfield in January 1991 when he was at the helm of the five-time European champions and the two families have been close ever since.

Redknapp's reputation as a transfer market wheeler-dealer has made him an attractive option for Liverpool, who are heavily in debt and could have only £5million to invest in new players if they do not trim their squad this summer.

The former Bournemouth, West Ham, Southampton and Portsmouth manager has transformed the fortunes of the White Hart Lane club since replacing Juande Ramos in October 2008.

Redknapp his since guided the club into the top four of the Premier League - ironically at the expense of Liverpool - and they have the prospect of UEFA Champions League football to look forward to next season.

Spurs would be loath to lose the services of Redknapp, who has been granted an impressive transfer budget during his time in North London, and are sure to fight hard to keep the 63-year-old.

Redknapp has only one year remaining on his current contract at White Hart Lane and talks over a new deal are yet to take place.

This is highly unlikely, Spurs look like a better option than Liverpool at the moment, more stable, more cash, in the CL and with great moral, with a young English squad.

Respect to Harry, he does have a knack for getting teams out of trouble however his first taste of a big club is tottenham hotspur. In the space of a year and a half in charge of tottenham even Harry had to spend £70m before getting into the top 4.

James Brown (Sunderland fan) says...

This is a non-starter straight off the back, the man has just got Spurs into the Champions League, plus the fact that he's got money to spend at Spurs. Also this is the team that he supported when he was young lad, it's his dream job.

harry is a terrific manager and has been excellent in the transfer market but i honestly don't think he would give up CL football and the financial support he gets at spurs to take charge at Lfc and everything that it intails! but, yeah, if it happened i'd be happy enough. first choice though would be guus hiddink

The scousers should stay away from our beloved Harry, He has worked wonders at spurs and the best manager we have had for years and a lot more to come I hope lets keep what we've got and bring back some glory to the lane and stuff Liverpool, Why would he want to go there anyway when we got champions leauge football next season anyway, So fingers crossed spurs fans eh and Mr Levy get a new contract sorted for Harry sooner rather than later.

Mark Marven (Tottenham Hotspur fan) says...

Why would Redknapp leave a team he has guided to the Champions League and has the funds to build a long term squad he wants, for a team in the Europa League who have large debts and a declining squad. No chance!

Laughable. Europa or Champions League?????? Club looking to sell or stable club??????? Squabbling owners or one focused and committed owner?????? I just hope the board don't do an FA and jump and beg him to stay with a new, improved bumper contract, If he wants to stay he'll stay and if he wants to go then let him go. I only want people at the club who want to be there. Also, I can't see Harry traveling north everyday as all his clubs have been in the south. Good luck Liverpool but I don't fancy your chances - not a worried Tottenham Fan.

i think he would be the best replacement as far as the news goes on now !! with the performance he has shown as a manager at white hart lane, he will fill in the shoes of rafa benitez and bring in some confidence amongst the liv players..

Gavin Critchley (Manchester United fan) says...

Who on earth would Redknapp want to give up a great team he's developed, a well financially supported club, and his first go at Champion's League football. For a team with huge ownership troubles, on the verge of selling their best players and what has been seen by some recently as a makeshift squad?

Jake Abbey (Liverpool fan) says...

Great piece of news for LFC. However, i cannot see Redknapp leaving spurs, after he said he wanted to stay there for the rest of his managerial career. If we did manage to get him , it would be a great boost to the club. He is a fantastic manager, but the main factor why i think he will stay at spurs is that he will have a bigger transfer budget there than at anfield. However, we are a bigger club, and i believe he will find it hard to resist a move to us.

Stuart Ayre (Manchester United fan) says...

manage a team in the champions league or manage a team in the europa league and won't get champions league qualification for a few years as they will have to rebuild if gerrard and mascherano leave

Chris Horton (Manchester United fan) says...

Why on earth would Harry want to go to Liverpool? He's got Champion's League football to look forward to at Spurs next season, not to mention financial stability. If he even though of going to Liverpool it would be a poor, poor move.

Steve C (Liverpool fan) says...

This has got to be a joke surely! There is no way we want Redknapp as our manager! This would be a huge mistake!

Thomas Graham (Newcastle United fan) says...

In my opinion the perfect manager for Liverpool would be Kevin Keegan. His tactics in football would suit Liverpool perfectally. He is a loved man in Liverpool just like in Newcastle which would earn him respect and time straight away. Realistically I believe Kenny Dagleish will become the next manager as the fans have shown there desire for him. I believe if the next manager is not chosen correctly for Liverpool's future then Liverpool may not see Championsleague for a long time. the club would then stop attracting world class talent and would be forced to sell there own world class players such as Torres and Gerrard. In my opinion Liverpool's future is not at all bright.
