Mascherano: Reds career turned sour
They'd promised me something for a whole year and they never fulfilled their promise.
Javier Mascherano
Quotes of the week
Barcelona new-boy Javier Mascherano has accused former club Liverpool of lying about his motivations for leaving Anfield this summer.
The Argentina captain sealed a £20million move to Camp Nou last week after being denied a transfer to the Catalan giants in the summer of 2009.
Mascherano's final weeks at Liverpool turned sour amid reports that he had refused to play in the 3-0 defeat at Manchester City to force a route out of England for family reasons.
But the 26-year-old West Ham flop has blamed the Reds for his desire to leave, claiming the Premier League side denied him his switch to Barcelona after promising 12 months earlier that he could leave if an acceptable bid was received.
The Guardian quotes Mascherano as saying about Liverpool: "When they started to involve my family and to say things that didn't make sense, I obviously suffered.
"They'd promised me something for a whole year and they never fulfilled their promise.
"And that didn't have anything to do with my family or anything else. When you read or hear lies, you obviously get angry."
Mascherano was plucked from West Ham's reserve team by ex-Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez, who had wanted to take the midfielder to current club Inter Milan.
And the South American has praise for his one-time boss, adding: "Rafa taught me tactics.
"He's one of the coaches who have taught me the most in my career and I'm very grateful to him.
"He was fundamental. He gave me the chance to join Liverpool. He had confidence in me at a time when, perhaps, nobody would have dreamed of giving me an opportunity. I'll be grateful to him all my life."

Does one not get the feeling Masch is destined to play in Italy? Inter maybe!!! ( Sneaky Rafa ) "O what a terrible web we weave when we endeavor to deceive"

Come on guys lets stop moaning about masch. This is a great example why every premier league team should have 8 home grown players. These foreign players have no loyalty.

I have seen the interview he gave after the Argentina match. Nothing to do with the club but his family. Thanks heavens he is gone for now, such an unappreciative footballer. Good to see that other clubs'' fans agree on how footballers have become greed and big headed for their clubs.

Whats strange about what he has said is that if you read the comments from the fans of our rivals they are getting behind Liverpool instead of using it as the chance to kick us while we are down, just shows how annoyed all fans are of these type of mercenary players.

Javier is trying to change his story to make himself look good. But even if the club did let you down, the fans never did and you let us down by refusing to play against city and we wont forget that and thats how you will be remembered

Wow!! what child!!! this is unbelievable, I cant believe Mascherano''s attitude and loyalty, they are both a disgrace, and it just shows how immature and unprofessional he really is. He was a good player but at the same time he did give away a lot of unneccesary freekicks and conced many yellow and even some yellow cards. His main ability was his stamina, work rate and his tackling ability. his passing was ok but nothing top draw i would say. doesnt really score goals which is much more desired for a central midfield player. he is comfortable on the ball but isnt really that much of a technical player. I would say Alonso was well better than him. I also believe Liverpool will benefit more from Raul Meireles as he is more of a technically gifted player, can score from distance, has good passing and is solid in the tackle, a more technical version of steven Gerrard i would say which could give balance to Liverpools central midfield.

i agree with every comment made and it is good to see other football club supporters from our rivals all agreeing as well about these over paid and over rated players good riddance.

Javier, get a grip son. You and your agents have been stirring the pot for the last two years. Depending upon what interview you gave, you stated you would be happy at either Inter of Barca. I believe the wages at Barca are up to ¿8 mill a year. I remember you being quoted in several articles that your family hadn''t settled, your wife didn''t learn English. I even recall reading yourself and Insua lived adjacent to each other, but were ''prisoners''. I seem to recall a new contract signed last year. Players wanting away usually don''t sign new contracts. They usually sit with the knowledge that a large pay day awaits at the end of the contract. This way you win both ends up. I''ve read at various stages Walter Tamer was your agent and a fine job he was doing for you both, but since Lionel Messi took over, my respect for you both has diminished. I do believe you were the perfect player for Rafa''s set up, not for Pep''s. I do believe your style of play suits the slow methodical build up. I wish you all the best, just the nice memories have been soured one way or another. Your attitude down by the Rambles will be duly noted, they don''t tolerate fools gladly down there.

I always thought the reason he wanted to leave us was because his wife didnt settle in England and didnt speak the language? He cant backtrack now and start blaming the club for things especially after he stitched us up by refusing to play against City.

Average? Come on, he''s the best holding/defensive midfielder in the world and we got peanuts for him. Granted, the last few weeks/months have soured our view of him somewhat, but he''s still a world-class player - one of only 3 that we had, along with Reina and Torres. If we thought he picked up a lot of cards here, though... goodness me, he''ll be suspended every few games in Spain.

They key phrase is "acceptable bid". Who''s he to dictate to the club what is and isn''t an acceptable bid. As it was, I''m disgusted that Liverpool allowed him to go so cheap.

Simon Kitson (Liverpool fan) says...
So what promise did Liverpool break then Masch? They agreed that they would sell if to Barcelona if, and only if, they received an acceptable bid. That is exactly what they did. If I were you Masch I''d shut up now before you make yourself look even more ridiculous....

Masch we rescued you when your career had nose dived and warming the bench at West Ham we made you captain of your home country, thanks for your comments. In 12 months when your slagging off Barcelona because you sat warming their bench you''ll wish you were back at Liverpool.Be careful what you wish for old son.

Hey masch get ready to warm the bench and play in reserves, your good work ethic and sideway passing wont get you a start at Barcelona. They employ natural footballers like iniesta, xavi and soon fabreagas. Your about to be found out. 18-20 million is a good price glad to be rid of him. Midfielders should be able to attack and defend especially if there 20 millions worth.

Hang on, we took young Masch from West Ham Rezzies and made him into the Best defensive midfielder in the world and he just decides "oops its time to leave now". It won''t work for him in spain anyways with the way he tackles so have fun and pick your chin up on the way out!

We buy you from West Ham...make you the player you are today...which made Barca even notice you...we sell you for a low price because of your attitude...then you try and disrespect us...Well sorry Mr Mashcerano, we all know Barca wanted Fabregas not you...
