Carragher: Has called for fully English side
Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has called for change in the Three Lions set-up by insisting everything about the camp should be English.
Italian Fabio Capello, a former Real Madrid and AC Milan boss, took the helm of the national side two years ago.
But Carragher, who was recalled to England's World Cup squad by Capello in the summer, has made his position clear on the issue of whether a foreigner should be the national team boss by urging the FA to appoint an English manager.
And, in addition to a home-grown head coach, 32-year-old Carragher insists the players and the entire backroom team should also be English.
"I've always said the English squad should be just English," said Carragher.
"Other countries might break and bend the rules but I don't think we should - and it's not just about the players either.
"I also think the manager should be English as well.
"I've played for Fabio Capello, we have a good relationship, I have great respect for him and I'll always support him.
"But I think it's best for the national team if everybody is English. That includes managers, coaches, doctors and players. That's what it's all about."
Capello is under pressure as England manager following the team's dismal display at the World Cup in the summer.
The Italian, who has attracted much criticism for the Three Lions' disappointment in South Africa, could face the axe if England fail to win their upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland.
And Carragher believes an English coach would be the only suitable replacement, saying: "People say English managers aren't good enough but it doesn't matter.
"The point of international football is you have the best players, the best coach, the best kitman, the best physio from your country."

Let''s examine the evidence shall we? English Managers v Foreign. 1. Kev [i''d love it] resigned after dismal start to qualification. 2. Sven 3 quarter finals. 3. Wally withthe brolly - failed to qualify. 4. Capello last 16. What this proves is that the team isn''t good enough, but that foreign managers are better at getting the most out of the team. And i don''t want to hear the opinions of Jamie I''m retired, no i''m not retired, yes i am retired again Carragher. We have seen more commitment to the England cause by Sven and Capello than from him; so zip it.

John Barnes - who did quite well for England - was born in Jamaica. Terry Butcher was born in Singapore. Owen Hargreaves - England''s best player at the 2006 World Cup - was born in Canada. Would Carra have ruled out these players as well as "not English"? John McEnroe - a tennis player, I know - was born in Germany, but like everyone else I''ve always thought of him as American. The country you happen to be born in doesn''t really matter - you have no choice in the matter. It''s your national allegiance that counts, surely.

So lets say in a fantasy world Sir Alex got the job of manager, I am guessing Carragher would oppose this, even if they win stuff, because he is not English? He is just trying to put the blame somewhere else due to the England squads poor performance. I also find it funny that people trash Arsenal for not having English players, yet three of the main players that people think should be given play for Arsenal. Also what difference does it make if they do not have English players, that will only increase the number of people saying "oh you should not have played so and so and you should have given so and so a chance instead."

i dont think it comes down to the nationality of a Manager of our national squad, as a business man I can not understand why i would employ a ceo ( or manager) that could not speak the language and after all this time Fabio still only has a basic grasp the poeple who should be fired are the ones that gave him the job. That is the real problem with the national managers job. Thats my two pence worth

Roy Hodgson or Harry Redknap will be the only managers good enough (all round) to manage England. They both know the premiership and the players in it, IE: England players, their strengths and weaknesses AND they are THE two most respected English managers around. They would have a true drive to win for their own country, knowledge on the players, repore with the players and above all else PASSION. If either one of them was to except or be given the managers job Englad would win a competition sooner or later, surely? Just a shame that neither will ever leave the clubs that they are at now...

maybe Carra should become the next England manager. he was the only 1 in SA who played with passion and desire and he seems like the only english player with a good football mind.

Steve Taylor says...
We don''t need an ENGLISH Manager to win International Trophies, we need the RIGHT Manager, and until we win something we will not have the RIGHT Manager. What I''m saying is look at the recent Managers England have had since Robson, Graham Taylor was considered the right Manger but failed miserably, Terry Venables WAS a great manger, but the press couldn''t lay off him about Non Football issues, so he stepped down, Hoddle had a fantastic record, but he spoke out of terms and the Press forced him out as well, Keegan was the man the press wanted, but he was absolute TOSH, Sven took over and the press loved him, until we got knocked out of the WC by Brazil (at ONLY the Quarter Final Stage) then forever more will be tainted as a rubbish FOREIGNER, then they made the panic decision of employing ANOTHER English Manager in McLaren, yeah that worked didn''t it, then Capello comes in wins 9 out of 10 Qulifiers, makes the BIG decisions, shows his passion by snapping at Photographers, and he will guide us to WC Glory, 4 Matches later and evrything he does is CRAZY and DESERVES the Sack. So why will it be different if we get Harry, Sam, Joe or Beckham to manage us, the press will love them, but the minute it goes against what they write, they will call for that blokes head on a plate as well. So until we win something, we wont have the RIGHT Manager, but we wont have the RIGHT Manager until we win something.

Matt Thompson - I''m not sure what else you think Carra could have won at a club level bar the premier league? He''s won the european cup, uefa cup, league cup, fa cup, charity shield. The premier league is obviously the big one and he hasn''t won but I''m not sure what else he could or should have won that he hasn''t. Last year was far from Carra''s best but he was certainly not a shambles. I''m a season ticket holder so watch him play every home game unlike most on here who probably rate him from match of the day and sky. True reds fans appreciate his honesty and committment and he is and always will be a reds legend. You can stick to watching the Anton and Titus comedy double act!!

The foreign managers have proved they can win nothing with England, so why bother with them. Even if we have an English manager who is nowhere near as good as these so called top foreign managers, what difference will it make to England winning anything? The way English football has gone is the way the country as a whole has gone and that''s to lose it''s identity.

David Clarke says...
The England manager should be qualified to manage England in International competitions the same way players are qualified to play for their country of birth. International sport is about one nation against another not about who can afford to buy the best manager or players from another country and so deprive another nation of his international services. Exceptions should only be made by FA to those that have settled here, played for or managed a British club for several years.

Eddy H, and all others. We all have an opinion, mine is "Carra" was an average player in a good top four team. Last season he was an average player in an average team. Many believe he went to the WC to put himself in the shop window, true or not, didnt help much did it. "Carra was brilliant against Algeria", what an acheivement!!! "most informed commentators and managers will tell you that Carra has been one of the most consistent and highly rated defenders of his generation." - Is anyone refering to the same people that said we''d go far in the WC?

Funny how all but one or two of the negative comments have been by United fans, especially considering it is common knowledge they (United Fans) don''t give a toss about England as they are oh so fond of stating. As for what Carra said, I agree but the problem is England are damaged goods, we lack the players to form a decent and cohesive team capable of challenging the worlds top clubs, and we lack a decent, young, English manager. Nowadays league football is all about money so managers are not given enough time in a job, which in turn means that some of the good lower league managers are stuck in a rut in the championship while Premier League teams bring in big name, big money managers in a vain attempt to increase revenue. Untill we fix the leage we have no viable hope of fixing the problems with our national team.
