Arsenal defender Kolo Toure has hailed Mathieu Flamini's outstanding start to the season.

The French midfielder appeared to be on his way out of the club over the summer after Arsene Wenger admitted he would not stop the player leaving.

But Flamini opted to stay at Emirates Stadium and he has since blossomed in partnering Cesc Fabregas in the heart of Arsenal's midfield.

Marathon runner

He has started all eight of The Gunners' Premier League matches this season, and has been credited for his bustling work-rate which appears to have allowed further expression from his Spanish team-mate.

Toure, who is currently stand-in captain for the injured Wiliam Gallas, praised Flamini's tireless displays and backed his hearty attitude.

"He does such a huge job in midfield. Thanks to him, in defence we are rarely put in trouble," he told L'Equipe.

"He is a real marathon runner, he runs everywhere. He has a fantastic heart and fights for everyone."

AC Milan's Gennaro Gattuso is renowned for his die-hard approach on the field, and Toure explained that Flamini has now earned the nickname of the Italian international.

"Having such a player in your team is just great. He is involved in any clash, but only for the good of the team. That is why we call him Gattuso," he added.
