Van Persie & Adebayor: Fearsome double act
Emmanuel Adebayor believes his blossoming partnership with Robin van Persie can fire Arsenal to glory this season.
The Gunners have gone more than three years since they lasted lifted some silverware, the 2005 FA Cup, but an exciting blend of youth and experience could see them end that barren spell in 2009.
In order to help them fulfil that dream, the weight of goalscoring responsibility will inevitably fall upon the broad shoulders of Adebayor and his Dutch accomplice Van Persie.
The duo have begun the new campaign in menacing fashion, plundering a brace apiece in Arsenal's 4-0 UEFA Champions League demolition of Porto on Tuesday, and have set their sights on helping the club claim a long overdue trophy.
"We are working hard for the team - he has got the same ambition as me," said Adebayor of Van Persie.
"We are here to help this team, we are here to help win something so I'm very pleased with the way he played against Porto.
"I gave him a pass and he gave me a pass. That shows there is a good relationship between the two of us.
"We are very happy and hopefully we can help this team win something this season."
The comprehensive midweek victory in Europe has helped banish the painful memories of a shock defeat to Hull last weekend, with Arsenal back to their free-flowing best.
Adebayor is hoping that form can now be carried into Saturday's trip to the Stadium of Light to face Sunderland, allowing Arsene Wenger's men to regain some momentum in the Premier League title race.
"I hope we are back on track," said the Togolese striker.
"Against Porto we showed good character, good personality and we played good football.
"We know that as soon as we put the ball on the ground and play our football, we have a lot of chances to win.
"That is what we did well against Porto. We are very pleased with our performance and hopefully we can do that again on Saturday.
"We are not playing to send a message, we are just playing to enjoy ourselves. We want to go as far as possible in the Champions League.
"We enjoy ourselves a lot on the pitch and we just want to keep on going, keep enjoying ourselves and see where we end up."
