Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre has insisted the club are 'still in the race' for silverware this season.

The Gunners have so far struggled for consistency in the 2008/09 term, with Arsene Wenger's side currently eight points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

On Wednesday night Arsenal's UEFA Champions League group stage campaign ended on a sour note as they slumped to a 2-0 loss in Porto, although they still qualified for the next round.

But former Manchester United player Silvestre is certain a youthful Gunners team still have time to 'grow up'.

Consistency

"The season is long. It is difficult if you judge the team on Wednesday night, because you cannot expect to perform like that and win anything," he said.

"But the squad is big and there are going to be different games, there are going to be points to catch - on the road to Middlesbrough first of all.

"It is going to be tough, but we have got time to grow up and we made it difficult for ourselves. However, we are still in the race.

"We proved against Manchester United and Chelsea that the quality is there, so we just have to get the consistency."
