Emmanuel Adebayor marked his return from injury with the winner for Togo against Cameroon as Morocco suffered a surprise defeat by Gabon.

Arsenal striker Adebayor has been sidelined for several weeks and there had been reports of a club-versus-country row after he was called up for the World Cup qualifier.

However, ahead of the game, Adebayor confirmed he had Arsene Wenger's blessing to play for his country and he celebrated his comeback with the only goal against Cameroon.

Adebayor struck after just 11 minutes after a mistake by Andre Bikey and then missed a second-half penalty for Togo in the opening match in Group A.

In the group's other game, Gabon sprang a shock after holding on for a 2-1 success away to Morocco.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Roguy Meye scored in the first half for Gabon before Mounir El Hamdaoui netted a late consolation.

Issam Jemaa hit a 72nd minute winner as Tunisia started their Group B campaign with a 2-1 triumph in Kenya.

Ammar Jemal had earlier given Tunisia a fifth-minute lead, with Kenya briefly drawing level on 70 minutes through Dennis Oliech.

In Group C, Algeria were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw from their trip to Rwanda.

Sevilla striker Fredi Kanoute was on target as Mali drew 1-1 away to Sudan in the opening game in Group D.

Moumouni Dagano plundered a brace as Burkina Faso enjoyed a 4-2 victory at home to Guinea in Group E.
