Cesc Fabregas insists Arsenal must improve defensively if they are to win the UEFA Champions League.

The European competition is the Gunners' last chance of a trophy this season and they face holders Manchester United in the semi-finals.

The first leg is at Old Trafford next Wednesday and Arsene Wenger's side will head into the game having produced a couple of shaky defensive displays.

Arsenal lost 2-1 to Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-finals last weekend before drawing 4-4 in a thrilling game with Liverpool in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

Fabregas acknowledges the quality of the Gunners' attacking play, but admits the defensive side of their game must show a marked improvement before they face United.

Difficult

"We have seen the best things we can do, but there are a lot of things we can improve on," said the Arsenal captain.

"We played in front of great players and great fans and the team has to be proud of what we achieved, but still we go home with the feeling we should have done more.

"We gave the goals away too easily and after all we did to create four opportunities to score four goals - it is difficult to take.

"From an attacking point of view, we played one of the best games of the season. However, defensively we need to improve a lot if we want to be in the Champions League final.

"It is the most difficult thing because when you attack you have the creativity to do what you feel.

"If defensively you are not well positioned, you will concede goals. We still need to do a lot of work on it."
