Campbell: Delighted with move
To join a club such as Newcastle United, with its proud tradition, heritage and magnificent support, is absolutely tremendous for me.

Quotes of the week
Newcastle United have finalised the signing of veteran defender Sol Campbell on a one-year contract.
Campbell's short-term deal at Arsenal expired at the end of last season and he had been attracting interest from several clubs.
He held talks with Newcastle's fierce rivals Sunderland and was also considering a move to Old Firm giants Celtic.
However, Campbell has opted to link up with the promoted Magpies and the 35-year-old has expressed his delight at securing a move to St James' Park.
"At this stage of my career I couldn't have wished for a better move," Campbell told the club's official website.
"To join a club such as Newcastle United, with its proud tradition, heritage and magnificent support, is absolutely tremendous for me.
"I'd like to thank Chris Hughton for putting his faith in me and aim to repay him and the supporters by giving everything I possibly can to help re-establish this great club in the top tier of English football.
"There's a real buzz about the place and that's great. I've played at St James' Park numerous times and always found it a fantastic place to play, there's always a tremendous atmosphere."
Magpies boss Hughton added: "I have known Sol since he was a lad at Tottenham and am fully aware of what he has to offer. That is experience, quality, calm assurance and leadership.
"He's a dedicated professional, a terrific addition to the squad, and I look forward to working with him again."

Great signing but we need a little consistency in our decision making. This is the same Sol Cambell that was too old for Glenn Roeder years ago before he signed for portsmouth. Just look what he has done since.

Rob Shreeve (Newcastle United fan) says...
A great signing!...If Sol can produce the form he showed when he first arrived at portsmouth then he will be able to lead the backline successfully, possible captain material and our survival chances just went up by 20%, now get a decent goal poacher Chris and we should have a decent season.

i really dont know about sol campbell. one side of me says yeah, experienced and powerful defender. the other side is saying too old and dated!!! at the moment i think newcastle should continue to focus on some top quality strikers that can help us score goals, maybe rooney??? lol well we can all dream eh!

Great signing, just what we need in our defence. His experience will be vital to Newcastle. Hope he does well..

Michael Garner (Newcastle United fan) says...
Fantastic signing. Just what we needed. Our defence has always cost us dearly over the years so an experienced head like Sol at the back can only help. A real leader who still has plenty to offer both at club level and internationally for England.

Craig Brown (Stoke City fan) says...
i think the signing of sol campbell could prove to be a fantastic move as he is an expierenced veteran and the young lads such as steven taylor, mike williamson and james perch could learn alot from and establish hemselves as solid players as campbell has done for years now for both club and country

Mickey Summers (Chelsea fan) says...
even at 35 he still has something to offer, if he is only used as part of a squad rotation... his ability to read the game and direct play could be the key to newcastle bolstering up what was a shakey defence when they were in their relegation season,... winning promotion back to the is great for the premier league , newcastle utd, and those great supporters but they will need to step up their game and this signing could be part of a short term solution ...good luck to all you geordie fans
