Roberts sorry for red card

By Lewis Rutledge

Wigan striker Jason Roberts has admitted that he was disappointed with himself after being sent off in the 1-1 draw against Everton.

The 28-year-old was red carded for elbowing David Weir in a fiery climax to the JJB Stadium clash, just moments after Toffees front man Duncan Ferguson had been dismissed for lashing out at Paul Scharner.

Roberts will now miss three Premiership games, against Bolton, Tottenham and Liverpool, but he acknowledges that he only has himself to blame.

"I am disappointed to have got myself sent off, I think I was a little naïve," he said.

"Ferguson had been sent off just before, and after someone has been given the red card you always have to be a bit careful yourself.

"Paul Jewell is a little bit disappointed and he said to me straight after the game that if you raise your elbows, you can sometimes get yourself into trouble.

"I am annoyed with myself that I have to miss some games now as I am really enjoying my football at the moment.

Roberts was relieved, however, that a fixture change allows him to be suspended for the Tottenham game rather than the Carling Cup final against Manchester United on February 26.

"Being available to play in the final is one positive point and good news," he added.

Everton defender Weir was also unhappy with the incident, and refused to clear Roberts' name, even if The Latics' man's actions had been unintentional.

"I just got caught on the jaw. That's all I know," he remarked.

"I've not seen it on the TV so I can't comment on whether or not it was accidental or not.

"But it doesn't to me if it was accidental, he has caught me and that's the end of the story as far as I'm concerned."
