Leicester are set to boost their Championship promotion challenge by capturing Everton striker James Vaughan on loan.

The 21-year-old was also targeted by Derby after playing two games on loan with the Championship strugglers earlier this season.

But Leicester are keen to enhance their attacking options as top scorer Matty Fryatt is recovering from surgery after breaking his jaw in two places against Doncaster a month ago.

The Foxes hope to clinch Vaughan's services on a one-month loan, with the option to extend the deal to the end of the season.

Injury woe

Vaughan has struggled with injuries since becoming the Premier League's youngest goalscorer in April 2005 and of his 46 league appearances for Everton, only eight have been starts.

With his first-team opportunities limited at Goodison Park earlier in the season, he joined Derby on loan in September but that stint was cut short by a knee injury.

Since returning to fitness, Vaughan has scored twice in 10 appearances for the Toffees, making only one start.
