Per Frandsen has been told that he will not be offered a new contract at Bolton Wanderers as Sam Allardyce released his retained list for the summer.

The Danish midfielder has been with The Trotters for eight years and Allardyce had nothing but praise for him.

Allardyce says that it was a tough decision to let the Dane leave The Reebok, but knew he would not get regular action next term and thought he would be better served by a move.

"Per has had a fantastic career with Bolton Wanderers," Allardyce told the club's website. "He has played for us with distinction and honour.

"He's had a great time here and I have had a great time working with him.

"He was disappointed at not being offered a new contract. I need someone as talented as Per but younger.

"He has had eight great years at the club. I have ultimate respect for him.

"He has been without doubt one of the best foreign players to play for this club.

"Per will go down in Bolton folklore."

Former Manchester City, Leicester and Newcastle defender Steve Howey has also been told he can move on, along with Frenchman Ibrahim Ba.

Spanish striker Javi Moreno has also left the club and rejoined Atletico Madrid after his loan spell expired, and he joins Gerald Forschelet, Lord-Kangana N'Diwa and Dwight Pezzarossi through the exit door.
