Sammy Lee admitted the result was all that mattered after Bolton's 3-0 victory over Reading, but was also delighted with his side's performance.
Bolton had been bottom of the Premier League table prior to kick-off but climbed up to 17th with a convincing win.
Gary Speed, Nicolas Anelka and Daniel Braaten scored the goals but Lee was more pleased with how his defenders played to limit Reading to just one or two chances.
"To get the win was all-important but the boys showed immense character as well because there's been an awful lot going on," Lee told Sky Sports.
"To have three games might have jolted their confidence a little bit but the response was terrific.
"What we're trying to do doesn't happen overnight but we went about our game-plan and the pleasing thing was that we kept a clean sheet.
"I am very pleased with the performance but there is still a lot for us to work on and we will work on it."
Nicolas Anelka and El Hadji Diouf have both been linked away with moves from Bolton in recent weeks but both were at the best against Reading.
And Lee is happy they will both stay at The Reebok Stadium, adding: "They are committed to Bolton, you could see that by the way they played.
"But it was a team effort and with the team ethic that we have, then we've got a chance."
