Kevin Davies believes Bolton's attacking players must do more if they are to get back to winning ways.

The Trotters have kicked off their Premier League campaign with three defeats and led twice against Liverpool on Saturday.

The Reds then came back to win 3-2 after new Bolton midfielder Sean Davis was sent off early in the second half.

Davies recognises that goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen needs greater protection and reckons only a joint effort will get them off the mark.

"We try to hang on and hang on but we need to be more resilient right throughout the side - not just the defenders or goalkeeper but everyone," said the Bolton captain.

"At 1-0 or 2-1, we have to protect Jussi Jaaskelainen, especially the five in front of the back four, and work that little bit harder.

Hard luck story

"In the end, it's another hard luck story, similar to the one we have had in the last two games, but we have got to try to put it behind us as quickly as we can."

Bolton are above Portsmouth on goal difference at the bottom of the table and the two sides face each other next, after the international break.

Davies feels Wanderers are currently lacking a winning mentality but that they should be encouraged by aspects of the Liverpool game.

"We can take something from it," he added.

"We have scored two goals at home against one of the best sides in Europe but we need to believe in ourselves a little bit more that we can go on and win it.

"It's about rolling our sleeves up now, being brave, and getting points."
