Gunnarsson offered new deal

Reading midfielder Brynjar Gunnarsson could commit to a new contract in the next few days, according to director of football Nick Hammond.

The 33-year-old Iceland international is out of contract this summer, but has been offered a new one-year deal by the club.

Hammond is due to meet with Gunnarsson's representatives in the coming days to discuss the terms of the contract.

"Bryn has been offered a new deal and I'm due to speak to his people in the next couple of days," he told Reading Post.

"With Bryn it is his right to look to see what else is out there to see if he can get a longer contract near the end of his career.

"We understand that situation and if he moves on then of course we will wish him the best of luck wherever he goes, but I hope he will stay."

Hammond also confirmed that the deal does not guarantee a future coaching role at the club.

"People need to earn the right to become a coach and do their badges, but Bryn is definitely someone who would be good at that," Hammond added.

"He's an intelligent guy who would definitely make a good coach."

The former Reading goalkeeper refused to comment on rumours that key players Kevin Doyle, Stephen Hunt and Andre Bikey are seeking moves away from the Madejski Stadium.

Hammond said: "We've always had a policy where we don't comment on speculation.

"We will let supporters know when there is something relevant to say. It's that time of the season now where there are no games so people need to fill column space at the moment.

"However, it's early days and I am getting lots of phone calls and we are obviously making phone calls to people too. Until something definitive happens though it's probably best to just keep quiet."
