New deal for Pompey keeper

Portsmouth goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown has signed a new contract to stay at the club until 2010.

Ashdown has provided the back-up to David James this season and has yet to appear for Pompey since the former England international's arrival.

He played two games on loan at Norwich City in October, having broken his finger at the start of the campaign.

The 26-year-old joined Pompey from Reading in 2004 and the keeper was happy to pledge his future to the South Coast club.

"I'm delighted," Ashdown told the club's official website. "It's brilliant for me because it's not been the best year of my career.

"To get that after hard work and coming back from my finger injury, hopefully I've impressed the coaching staff and the manager in training, and I've been rewarded with a new contract."

Meanwhile, Dejan Stefanovic is aiming to get back into the Portsmouth team after returning to training after a knee injury.

The Pompey captain has not played for two months, but the defender is eager to help the club's push for European football.

Stefanovic said: "My knee is feeling better. This week I have started doing some running, it is still going to take some time, but the most important thing is that I have started to run.

"Now I am looking forward to getting back in the team. I don't know how long that will be and I hope to be available for selection soon."
