Johnson: Back in the England fold
Harry Redknapp believes that Glen Johnson has the ability to become a world class defender.
The Pompey boss signed the full-back on a permanent basis from Chelsea during the summer and has been impressed by what he has seen.
He also worked with Johnson during his time at West Ham and is adamant that the England international has become a better player since arriving at Fratton Park.
"He has got everything to be a top, top player - pace, great in the air, can pass with it and run with it," he said.
"He's getting better and better and his confidence is good.
"His concentration has improved and most of all, his confidence has."
Redknapp also feels that Johnson is benefiting from escaping the continuous pressure to perform which exists at Stamford Bridge.
"If you made a mistake you were out the next week but here with me, unless he has a disaster he is playing every week because he's different class," the Pompey boss said.
"They had so many players. You might think you'll get dropped next week again if you make a mistake, and (Paulo) Ferreira would come in."
Johnson, who is back in the England fold for the friendly with France on Wednesday after two-and-a-half years in the international wilderness, puts his recent resurgence on the South Coast down to a growing maturity and an extended run of first-team football.
"You always get better as you get older and more mature," said the defender.
"This is the first time I have been playing very regularly, except for when I first joined Chelsea, which is a long time ago now (2003).
"Now I just want to play as much as I can. I have always had confidence in my own ability but Harry is now playing me every week which I am thriving on at the moment.
"Every player needs games, it doesn't matter how good you are."
