Babayaro: Pompey trial
Celestine Babayaro's bid to earn a deal at Portsmouth has been dashed with the news he has contracted malaria.
The Nigerian had pitched up on the South Coast ahead of the new campaign as he looks to win a permanent stay at Fratton Park.
Portsmouth are in the market for a new left-back and following reported target Wayne Bridge's decision to sign fresh terms at Chelsea, Babayaro's attempt to earn a contract appeared to be strengthened.
However, the former Chelsea and Newcastle defender has learnt that he has been diagnosed with the tropical disease and his sojourn at Portsmouth has been curtailed, while he recuperates in a London hospital.
Celtic are also thought to be monitoring the 29-year-old's situation but until he makes a recovery, Pompey boss Harry Redknapp has put all football decisions on hold.
"It's awful for the lad, he's got malaria at the moment after picking it up while back home," he told The News.
"He didn't feel that great last week but he did alright.
"We have done a lot of physical training and he performed okay.
"But he's not with us at the moment. He's in a Chelsea hospital recovering.
"For his own sake I hope he recovers, we wish the lad all the best.
"Nothing will be happening on the football front at the moment, we've just got to wait for him to get better - and I really hope he does."
