Skysports.com understands Coventry and Charlton are battling it out for Portsmouth defender Martin Cranie.

The England Under 21 international is a loan target for both Championship clubs ahead of the new season.

Cranie only joined Portsmouth last summer, but he has struggled to establish himself at Fratton Park.

The 21-year-old had a spell on loan at Queens Park Rangers last season only for the move to be cut short after the full-back suffered a broken leg.

Pompey boss Harry Redknapp is believed to be keen to loan out Cranie so that he can continue his recovery and get some action under his belt.

The news has alerted both Coventry boss Chris Coleman and Addicks chief Alan Pardew who are both keen on bolstering their defences.
