Defoe: Opened the scoring

Portsmouth secured a 2-1 victory over Cape Town Ajax on Wednesday in their latest pre-season friendly.

Jermain Defoe and Pedro Mendes sealed the game with two goals inside the opening 20 minutes.

It took just 14 minutes for the Premier League side to carve open their opponents, Niko Kranjcar flicking a ball over the top of the defence for Defoe to confidently lob Sean Roberts.

Pompey then doubled their lead four minutes later as Mendes took full advantage of hesitancy in the Cape Town defence.

The Portuguese midfielder gathered the ball 25-yards from goal, before curling a sublime effort into the top corner of the net.

Cape Town finally came to life at the start of the second half, with Jamie Ashdown forced into two smart saves to deny Sameehg Doutie.

Pompey responded in a positive manner and almost added a third through Ben Sahar and Kranjcar.

However, it was the African outfit who rounded off the scoring in injury time when Dipsy Selowane beat Ashdown with a swerving effort from the edge of the box.
