Police will investigate the abuse aimed at Portsmouth captain Sol Campbell by Tottenham Hotspur fans last weekend.

Campbell was hit with a barrage of abuse from the stands during Pompey's 2-0 win over Spurs at Fratton Park on Sunday.

Hampshire Police had initially said that due to the sheer capacity of fans chanting it was impossible to make arrests at the time but that they would report the matter to the Football Association.

A Hampshire police spokeswoman said: "The complaint will be fully investigated but it's at an early stage."

Experienced defender Campbell has been a target for Spurs fans since his move to North London rivals Arsenal back in 2001.
