Redknapp: Not convinced

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp believes a salary cap in the Premier League is not 'realistic'.

Football Association chairman Lord Triesman is pushing the idea to try and stave off the dangers of an estimated £3billion worth of collective debt among English top-flight clubs.

Some sectors have backed the theory, but Redknapp is unconvinced and does not feel it will be possible to implement a cap.

The Fratton Park boss fears that players would seek moves away from England in order to earn top wages in other European countries.

Difficult

"I do not think it is realistic. I can't see it happening," Redknapp told Sky Sports News.

"How do you do it? If you don't pay the money somebody else will. If you stop it in England, players will go off somewhere else and get the money.

"It is very difficult. I don't know where you would stop it and where you would start it.

"Who is going to take a cap on a contract that is in existence? If you do that the player would become a free agent.

"If a player comes up as a free agent there will be lots of clubs after him."
