Portsmouth goalkeeper David James is to have a shoulder operation later this week.

James, who missed Pompey's 3-1 victory over Sunderland on Monday with an unrelated sore neck, will undergo surgery in London on Wednesday.

He has been struggling with the problem for some time and Pompey have decided to take action to get him fit for the start of next term.

The 38-year-old will therefore miss Portsmouth's final game of the season against Wigan on Sunday.

Asmir Begovic may deputise again, with Pompey's Premier League survival having already been secured over the weekend.

News of James' injury will come as a blow to England manager Fabio Capello as he will not be able to play any part in this summer's World Cup qualifiers.

England face Kazakhstan and Andorra in early June and will be looking to strengthen their position at the top of Group Six.

Manchester United's Ben Foster, among the substitutes for the victory over Ukraine in April, is set to be sidelined for around two months following thumb surgery.
