Varney: Frustrated to miss out on return to Blackpool
Portsmouth striker Luke Varney has revealed his disappointment at missing out on the chance to face former club Blackpool this weekend after being sent off.
The 28-year-old enjoyed a season-long loan spell with The Seasiders as they won many plaudits in the Premier League last year.
However, the ex-Crewe and Derby man opted for the South Coast instead of a permanent switch to Blackpool last summer, but he told skysports.com that he enjoyed every minute of life in the top-flight and is hungry for more.
"There will obviously be a lot of pressure on their shoulders having come down from the Premier League, but we at home so it is one which we will go into with a lot of confidence," Varney told skysports.com.
"I had a few options last year from other clubs, but to get that year in the top-flight was something I couldn't refuse.
"I was really pleased with how many games I played whilst there and it was an experience that I'll never forgot.
"Obviously, it gives you a taste of where every player in the country, if not the world, wants to be and I'd love to get back in there before the end of my career."
Varney was one of ten summer signings to arrive at Fratton Park this summer and despite an inconsistent start to the season, he believes that they are slowly starting to gel as a side.
"When I first came in there was a weird atmosphere with everyone hoping more than expecting things to happen due to the small size of the squad and missing out on a few targets was frustrating," he continued.
"However, as soon as good quality players began arriving the atmosphere around the club and the town has been building and we are all looking forward to what is around the corner.
"The gaffer managed to bring in one or two more before the end of the window, which we have welcomed and we all look forward to a solid season in the Championship."
