Poyet: Demanding more

Tottenham assistant manager Gus Poyet believes the club should be aiming for a top four finish next season.

A 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at White Hart Lane courtesy of goals from Andrei Voronin and Fernando Torres condemned Spurs to an 11th-placed Premier League finish this season, but Poyet is targeting improvements next term.

Former Spurs boss Martin Jol had been charged with the task of breaking into the UEFA Champions League qualifying places at the beginning of this season, but a disappointing start to the campaign saw the Dutchman replaced by Juande Ramos in October 2007.

And Ramos' right-hand man, Poyet, is well aware that there will be an expectation in North London to see Tottenham challenging the likes of Liverpool in the future.

Consistency

"Maybe I can tell you when we start in July," Poyet told Sky Sports News when asked if Tottenham will be targeting the top four.

"It is going to depend on a few things, but we need to aim there and be closer. That is through consistency.

"You need consistency to be in the top four. Maybe we need to have a look at this game to learn.

"We have to remember when we got here we were in the bottom three. It was nervous and it was difficult to win games."

Berbatov stay

And Poyet is optimistic star striker Dimitar Berbatov, who is rumoured to be leaving the club, will remain at Tottenham ahead of a busy summer transfer market.

"I was waving as well and I am not leaving," added Poyet after the Spurs squad completed a lap of honour.

"It is difficult now. There are going to be too many rumours about people coming and going.

"They are under contract and we expect everyone to be here. What happens in the next month and the month after we can talk about, but at the minute it is nothing.

"There is no number (of new signings). It depends on a few things and what the team needs. It is not decided completely."
