Paul Robinson is eager to quit Tottenham for Aston Villa, according to sources close to the player.

Heurelho Gomes' imminent arrival at White Hart Lane has cast Robinson's future in North London into further doubt, with Juande Ramos having made no secret of his desire to install a new No.1 between the posts.

The England international endured a mixed past campaign, with Spurs' Carling Cup success offset by his being dropped by Ramos on a number of occasions.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill is understood to be weighing up whether to make a firm move for Robinson although, contrary to reports, no bid has been made and talks have still to take place.

Back on track

And Robinson believes O'Neill is the kind of manager who can bring the best out of him and help get his career back on track.

A source close to the player said: "Paul would welcome the opportunity to move to a club like Aston Villa.

"He believes Martin O'Neill can help to bring the best out of him. He realises his chances of playing regularly at Tottenham look unlikely.

"He feels such a move would help to resurrect his career."
