Tottenham manager Juande Ramos remains eager for Dimitar Berbatov to stay at White Hart Lane, but he has yet to decide if the striker will play against Middlesbrough.

Summer-long speculation has linked Manchester United with a £25million bid for Berbatov, with manager Sir Alex Ferguson understood to have come close to a move in the January transfer window.

Spurs, though, are unwilling to sell and, having already lost Robbie Keane to Liverpool, do not want to see the Bulgarian international leave North London.

However, Berbatov played just 45 minutes of the club's final pre-season clash with Roma last weekend and it is not yet certain whether he will feature in their Premier League season-opener at The Riverside on Saturday.

Wait

And Ramos has hinted that the 27-year-old is not certain to start against Boro, telling Sky Sports News on Thursday: "48 hours is a long time before I make that decision.

"There are two days to go. A lot can happen.

"I'll look at the team, I'll wait until the last training session, and see how he is and how everyone is and that is when I'll make that decision."

Ramos has reiterated his desire to see the former Bayer Leverkusen star stay and insists he has no problems with how the player is conducting himself as transfer rumours continue to rage.

Fantastic

"He is our player. He is at our club. He is a fantastic player so it would be great for him to stay," Ramos continued.

"He is an absolute pro. He has been working independently from anything outside of football.

"Any speculation has been handled by his agent and he has been getting on with training professionally.

Ramos is also adamant that he does not have a problem with Berbatov's agent, adding: "He is just doing his job as you expect."
