Portsmouth have confirmed that they are lodging an official complaint with the Football Association over abuse Sol Campbell received from Tottenham fans at the weekend.

Campbell commented last season that something should be done about the abuse that he has to endure whenever he meets his former club.

Since leaving Spurs for arch-rivals Arsenal in 2001 Campbell has been singled out by Tottenham fans.

Even though he is no longer with Arsenal, the abuse shows few signs of abating and was again evident at Fratton Park on Sunday.

Hampshire Police are investigating the issue after receiving a complaint, although they stated after the match that nothing could be done due to the volume of people chanting.

The FA could not launch an appeal without the club making a complaint and now, after discussions between Campbell and Pompey, that is what is going to happen.

No place

"After discussions with Sol Campbell, we will be making an official complaint to the Football Association concerning the verbal abuse aimed at him during Sunday's match against Tottenham," a Pompey statement said.

"Both Sol and the club feel no player should be subjected to personal abuse of this nature and that it has no place in football.

"The club will be urging the FA to look into this as a matter of urgency and will co-operate fully in any investigations which take place, either by the FA or by Hampshire Police."
