Darren Bent insists Tottenham are confident they could dispose of Manchester United in the Carling Cup semi-finals.

Spurs booked their place in the last four of the competition after claiming a hard-fought 2-1 success over Watford on Wednesday.

They are now just one of two top-flight sides to have made it this far, along with United, with Derby and Burnley having upset the odds to stand on the verge of a Wembley appearance.

Either of the Championship outfits would represent an easier passage to the final for defending champions Tottenham, but Bent is adamant that Harry Redknapp's side fear no-one.

Fantastic

The 24-year-old said: "We beat Chelsea in the final last year, so there is no reason we can't beat United if we get them.

"We're not looking to avoid anyone. We might as well face them head on, because if we didn't get them in the next round, we would probably get them in the final if we reached it.

"Manchester United are a fantastic side, but if we have to face them in the semis, we know what we need to do and we need to perform."

Clever

Meanwhile, Redknapp has revealed that Luka Modric is closing in on full fitness.

The Croatian playmaker has been out of action for a fortnight with a groin problem, restricting the attacking options available to his manager.

"I'd like to get him fit because he gives us a different option," Redknapp said.

"He plays in that hole and is clever. He can knit the game together for you. I hope he's okay."
