Jonathan Woodgate is hoping Tottenham Hotspur will back manager Harry Redknapp in the transfer market in January.

Redknapp has lifted Spurs out of the bottom three since taking over at White Hart Lane, but the team's form has faltered in recent weeks.

The Spurs boss is eager to improve his squad when the transfer window reopens and Woodgate stressed the importance of bringing in new players.

"Of course it is," Woodgate told the Evening Standard when asked if it is important the club sign fresh faces. "We are in a relegation battle and we have to keep improving. Every team have to buy players.

"If you look at this time last season, Spurs signed players and we must keep on buying.

"We need as many top-quality players as we can get. Stewart Downing is a Middlesbrough player, so I can't say much about his future. But he is an England international and anyone who plays for England is a good player."

Ref row

Meanwhile, Woodgate has joined his manager in criticising the display of referee Steve Tanner in Sunday's 2-0 defeat at West Brom.

Redknapp was unhappy with Tanner's failure to award a free-kick for a push on Michael Dawson for West Brom's first goal and Woodgate has called for action to be taken against error-prone officials.

He added: "We are playing in the Premier League, which is the biggest League in the world. You expect [bad decisions] in a Sunday league, but not in the Premier League.

"If we [the players] make mistakes, we are punished, but if the officials do, what happens to them? Nothing. Everyone could see it was a push on Dawson. Something has to be done."
