Ghaly storms off in May 2007
We all make mistakes. He made one that day and I'm sure he's learned from it.
Woodgate on Ghaly
Quotes of the week
Tottenham defender Jonathan Woodgate has urged fans to forgive Hossam Ghaly for his infamous shirt-throwing incident in May 2007.
Ghaly had been set to make his Spurs comeback against Wigan last Friday in the FA Cup, only to be booed by the White Hart Lane faithful as he prepared to come on.
Ghaly's Spurs career looked over two years ago when he threw his shirt in Martin Jol's direction and stormed down the tunnel after being substituted.
However, Ghaly remains with Spurs following a loan spell with Derby last term and with Harry Redknapp keen to utilise every member of his squad had planned on giving the Egyptian a second chance.
Woodgate is disappointed Ghaly did not get an opportunity to play against Wigan and wants fans to forgive him for his petulant behaviour as the club's precarious Premier League position means they cannot afford to alienate any of their players.
"He'll handle it but it's not nice being booed for a mistake two years ago," stated Woodgate in the Daily Star.
"We all make mistakes. He made one that day and I'm sure he's learned from it. I just want the fans to give him a break.
"He's bound to be down. The boss has given him a chance and he's been working really hard. He wants to try to play for Spurs.
"You can't ruin it. Fans have to get behind him. We need players like him. Let him back on the pitch then he can try to do something.
"I just want to get that message across. We're in it together and we need as many players as we can."
