Sebastien Bassong is confident Tottenham can win an exciting race for fourth place in the Premier League.

There would appear to be a four-way tussle for the final UEFA Champions League spot with Spurs, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Liverpool all involved.

Tottenham face Villa at White Hart Lane on Saturday evening and Bassong admits he is not prepared to settle for anything less than three points.

"We have to win these games. If we want to open up a gap against teams like that we have to beat them, not draw with them," he told the Daily Star.

"We want to have a comfortable lead over them. We are having a good season and we need to keep working hard to carry on that way.

"If we do that, we're going to finish in the top four. I think we will do it."

Spurs currently occupy fourth place and Bassong recognises that it will be a test of character as well as ability if they are to stay ahead of the chasing pack.

Tough

"Vila are one of our rivals. They have been together for ages and it will be a tough game," stated the defender.

"We will need to be strong on the pitch and in our heads to keep hold of that position, but I think we will be strong mentally.

"Villa, Manchester City and Liverpool are all going for that place. That's why it will be an exciting race until the end of the season."

Liverpool are regarded as a member of the 'Big Four' along with Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal but Bassong feels the top of the league will be much more competitive in future.

"The big four have been around a long time," he said. "Us, City, Villa - we all have to prove over many years we can be in there. I think we can."
