West Ham United have rejected a bid from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur for midfielder Scott Parker.

The England international was the Hammers' standout performer last season, with a collection of commanding displays helping the club steer clear of relegation.

His efforts were rewarded with a place in England's pre-World Cup squad, although he failed to make the cut for the South African showpiece.

He was expected to generate interest this summer, with numerous clubs reported to be keen to bring him on board.

Tottenham have made no secret of their desire to strengthen, as they prepare for life in the UEFA Champions League, and they are the first to have made an official approach.

Promise

They have, however, been knocked back by West Ham, with co-owner David Sullivan making it clear that Parker is not for sale at any price.

"I made a promise that I would not sell Scott and I will not, for any amount of money, break that promise to the West Ham supporters," he told the club's official website.

"Scott is not for sale at any price, to anyone. West Ham supporters, for too long, have had owners that sell their best players and promise one thing and do another.

"This is a new era. We are building a bigger, better West Ham and when we make a promise, we honour it."

Sullivan added: "The club informed Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy prior to him making the offer that we would not welcome any approach to unsettle the player.

"Scott Parker has three years left on his contract and the club has opened talks with his agent over a new five-year deal."

Daniel Diamond (Tottenham Hotspur fan) says...

Parker is not what we need. Our problem area isn''t the centre of midfield. We have Modric, Hud, Palacios, Sandro on his way and Jenas if he can be bothered to show up. To really push on from last season we need cover at right back (Micah Richards/Juliano Belletti), a world class centre back and a striker that can genuinly lead our front line (Suarez/Forlan). We need players that take us to the next level, not the likes of Bellamy and Parker. Sure, they have premiership experience but we need players with Champions League experience!

Andy Cam (Tottenham Hotspur fan) says...

We dont need Parker even though he is a decent player. We need another striker who has pace. Which is why Belamy is a target. We have Jenas, Hud, Sandro, Palacios in the middle and Modric, Krancjar who can also play in the middle. We could do with another centre but we have Dawson, Bassong, Kaboul even if King and Woody arent fit. Hudd and Corluka, Palacios can all cover and play as centre backs. We need another right back as cover for corluka. So a fast striker, a clever centre back and an experienced right back and are squad will be one of the strongest in the league.

Albert Wood (Tottenham Hotspur fan) says...

Parker was superb last season and is a clear upgrade on Jenas or O''Hara so I hope he finds a way to come to Spurs. We are not so strong in the middle because Parret, Bostock, and Sandro have all yet to start a single Premier League game.

Adam H (Birmingham City fan) says...

Haha how gullible are you Hammers fans? Do you genuinely believe a word that Sullivan and Gold say? I''ve experienced it so often at Birmingham...broken promises to the fans. I expect Scott Parker to be sold on deadline day, when in Sullivans words, "We had an offer too good to turn down". How can you believe a word they say when they continually bang on about how much debt you''re in , and they''re talking about ''signing'' Joe Cole, Riquelme, Thierry Henry, Ronaldinho and Beckham haha. Sullivan and Gold are penny pinchers...all those names conveniently come out around Season Ticket renewal and sellin g time, more lies to line their own pockets. I mean, look at your ticket prices for next season, what a joke they are! Nearly £70 for the top ticket and £40 for under 16 lol!?

This is great news!! There is no way Parker would improve the Tottenham squad in my eyes. We already have better midfielders than him, no disrespect but we do. COYS!!

David King (West Ham United fan) says...

Well done To our chairman we have been far too long a selling club.I think sullivan and gold take some bad stick present and in the currant recession with money at clubs becoming priority. they have shown true guts. Thank you both very much and i really believe this is a statement of intent. A very happy hammer today (28.07.2010) Remember this day as the day west ham fought back against the bullies of the world.

Ben Horgan (Tottenham Hotspur fan) says...

Doesn''t anyone else think it''s odd that all the comments in the media about the supposed bid from Spurs are comming from West Ham? Correct me if I''m wrong, but I don''t remember reading anything that''s been said by anyone at WHL about Parker - strange given how vocal ''Arry is in the media usually about transfer targets. Even IF Spurs have made a bid, its Sullivan that''s brought it to light, so the "typical Harry" comments and suggestions that Spurs are trying to unsettle Parker are hardly fair. Good player, but Spurs don''t need Parker so a bid probably hasn''t been made and it''s more likely that Sullivan is trying to use Spurs'' name, and the obvious rivalry between the two teams, to gain some good PR for him and the new owners of West Ham. As for those questioning why Parker would be interested in coming to the Lane, well Champs League (albeit qualifying round) vs money worries and religation fight... Hmm...

Matt Woodall (Birmingham City fan) says...

im not sure spurs need scott parker but usually when harry wants a player within reach he gets him. Sullivan,id take his comments with a pinch of salt because if a big enough offer comes in he will sell and then blame it on the player saying he made it clear he wanted to leave. At Blues he wasnt the best but got us out of a very bad place and left us in good stead with no debt (except the pay offs and stuff they left the club with when they sold the club which carson yeung has now had to pay off) but at west ham its his club who he supports and loves so maybe he will keep his word this time. Good Luck to him if he doesnt!!!

If Sullivan does stick to his guns and retain Parker then well done him. Though I do rate Parker, it''s nice to see other EPL clubs rating their English talent so highly and trying their best to hold onto him. One wonders, though, if a significant "cash + O''Hara" offer would sway Avram Grant. (...though, with Palacios, Huddlestone and Sandros, I guess Spurs don''t particularly need Parker THAT much).

Wayne Clark (Tottenham Hotspur fan) says...

Good for Sullivan! Putting our bid to one side, I''m glad to see a bit more club power in an era of too much player power. All too often suitors knock on the door and players spit their dummy out and get to walk away from years on a fixed contract. Football employment really is a law unto itself. I hope Parker shows the same sort of respect and at least sticks with Wham to see out his contract. England needs a good spread of players actually playing not sitting on benches. Besides, what do Spurs need another CM for when the defence is the walking wounded?

David Shepherd (West Ham United fan) says...

Joe Cole, Jermain Defoe, Michael Carrick, Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand. I saw these guys play in the same team at West Ham and we sold the lot! West Ham fans have put up with a lot from previous owners and unlike other so called ''big'' clubs our fans don''t dissapear when things look bad, even selling out home games after we were relegated. It''s nice to hear a board echo the feelings of the people that ultimately pay the wages of the club staff! Harry has always been a decent bloke and I hope he doesn''t trying to unsettle a player at a club that needs every player we can hang on to.

Mathew Preston (Tottenham Hotspur fan) says...

Harry prefers to play with Palacios and Huddlestone in the center so he would like someone such as Parker as a midfield general along with Sandro that''s four central midfielders then you got Modric and Kranjcar (LW) Lennon and Bentley (RW) then sell Jenas and O''Hara so our midfield wouldn''t be that bad. Parker, Bellamy (Sadly) and Richards seem to be the players Harry wants.

Brilliant - despite what they say Spurs fans would love a player of Scotty''s quality in their team - they just don''t like it that we''ve said no to them! Well done Gold and Sullivan - restored my faith in chairmen.

Nice to see the board sticking to what they say fopr a change, Parker''s the one West Ham fans want to stay - me included. Typical Redknapp trying to unsettle a player just to see if he can get a bargain. Maybe he should try a few Portsmouth players ?
