Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has paid tribute to Luka Modric for maintaining a professional approach in the midst of such intense transfer speculation.

Modric has nevertheless impressed Redknapp by staying focused on the club's pre-season tour of South Africa, and he captained Tottenham to victory over the Orlando Pirates on Saturday.

"His attitude has been first class. He has got on with it," Redknapp said on Sky Sports News.

"There would be players when they have wanted to move that really wouldn't have wanted to be playing today and not giving 100 per cent.

"But he only knows one way to play. He is a fantastic boy and a great professional.

"He worked hard today and his attitude couldn't be better."

Special

Rafael van der Vaart outshone Modric in Johannesburg with two goals in a 3-0 win against the Pirates that secured the Vodacom Challenge trophy for Spurs.

Redknapp would love to be challenging for more important silverware come the end of the season and recognises that it would be impossible for the club to achieve their ambitions if they let their best players leave.

"We can't just be selling our best players off," said the manager.

"Certain players just have that extra bit of class, like Rafa and Luka. We have some special players and we have to keep special players.

"They make the difference, so we have to keep Luka."
