Robbie Fowler has left Cardiff ahead of a proposed return to the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers.

The veteran striker ended a second spell at Liverpool last summer as he moved to Ninian Park on a free transfer.

However, new Blackburn manager Paul Ince is keen to offer Fowler another opportunity to play top-flight football and has invited the 33-year-old to the club's pre-season training camp in Germany.

A statement on Championship outfit Cardiff's official website said: "Late on Thursday Robbie informed us that he has been offered the opportunity to join Blackburn Rovers.

"We fully understand the lure of the Premier League was a major factor in his decision and we wish Robbie well in the future at his new club."

But it is understood that Fowler - who had not played for FA Cup finalists Cardiff since 15th December due to a knee injury - has yet to be offered a contract at Ewood Park.

Fowler and Ince were team-mates with Liverpool between 1997 and 1999 and the latter is eager for a reunion with the fourth highest scorer in the history of the Premier League.

Former England international Fowler has also had spells at Leeds United and Manchester City.

Fowler's agent George Scott admitted the approach from Rovers "was too good an opportunity to turn down".

He told the South Wales Echo: "Robbie was all set to sign up [at Cardiff] but at the last minute Paul Ince came in and handed him a chance to return to the Premier League.

"He started in the Premier League and it seems right to finish his career in the Premier League."
