Martin O'Neill hailed Aston Villa's second-half application after coming from behind to win 2-1 at Wigan Athletic.

Titus Bramble put Wigan ahead in dreadful conditions before headers from Curtis Davies and Gabriel Agbonlahor secured the points for Villa.

O'Neill acknowledged the conditions were not helpful for playing football, but was pleased with his team's character.

"The conditions were not conducive to fantastic football," O'Neill told Sky Sports. "I know that Wigan had a magnificent win a couple of days ago and were on a bit of a high, and we had to try and counter that as much as possible.

"By the same token we had to try and play our own game though and we struggled in the first half to do that and they were causing us a few problems with set-pieces.

"They scored from one, but I thought in the second half our application was terrific and we had to go and try to dig out a result, and that's exactly what we did."

Carew blow

Villa lost John Carew to injury after just 10 minutes, and O'Neill admits replacing the Norwegian striker affected his side.

He added: "It's a massive blow because he's been playing fantastic for us and you have to adjust and make changes within 10 minutes of the game.

"Those things happen and you have to be able to adjust. I'm not saying that it particularly put us off our stride, as I wasn't sure we were in our stride, but it took us time to apply ourselves to the task.

"I thought we showed commendable spirit and we showed a bit of ability to pull ourselves round for this."
