Martin O'Neill admits he would have liked to have added another striker to his Aston Villa squad before the transfer window closed.

The Villa boss was among the Premier League's busiest managers over the summer after embarking on a spending spree.

He improved competition in most areas of his squad, although O'Neill was unable to increase his striking options.

Reading's Kevin Doyle had been linked with a move to Villa Park, while reports claim O'Neill made a last-ditch £6million bid for Wigan Athletic's Emile Heskey.

O'Neill is happy with his overall recruitment during the summer and believes his Villa squad can now cope with the demands of domestic and European football.

Easier said than done

"It was quiet on deadline night," O'Neill told the club's official website.

"In an ideal world, it would have been great to sign another forward with the amount of games we have to play, but it's easier said than done.

"But we have an up-and-coming striker in Nathan Delfouneso who will play some games for us and we've got Gabby (Agbonlahor), John (Carew) and Marlon (Harewood).

"I feel I now have a talented group of players."
