Cardiff City have made a bid to sign on-loan winger Wayne Routledge on a permanent basis.

Routledge has impressed at Ninian Park in scoring twice in nine appearances for the Championship club since joining from Aston Villa in November.

His loan deal expires in mid-January and Cardiff boss Dave Jones is keen to hang on to the former England Under 21 international.

Queens Park Rangers have also been linked with a bid for Routledge, who only joined Villa from Tottenham Hotspur at the start of the year.

But Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale is optimistic that the 23-year-old will remain with Jones' side to boost the club's push for promotion.

Real hit

"Wayne has been a real hit at Cardiff and wants to stay," said Ridsdale in the South Wales Echo.

"I have spoken to Villa and they are not averse to a deal before his loan ends on January 17."

Jones confirmed he wants to keep Routledge in his squad along with on-loan Sunderland striker Michael Chopra.

"I want to keep this squad together and that means Michael Chopra and Wayne Routledge staying," said Jones.

"I leave any negotiations to the chairman, but I have told him how I feel."
