Stephen Warnock is adamant that Aston Villa can compete for a top-four position in the Premier League and win a major cup competition next season.

The full-back played a pivotal role in his first season at Villa Park following his summer move from Blackburn.

He made 30 appearances and reached the final of the Carling Cup and FA Cup semi-final under the managerial guidance of Martin O'Neill.

"I think it has been successful. I think it has been disappointing at times, where you get to Wembley and you don't get the rub of the green," he told the club's official website.

"Those things happen. But hopefully they will make the group stronger as a team and we'll come back and hopefully get to a final next year and win it."

Warnock cites too many draws as the main reason why Villa failed to gatecrash the top four, but the defender believes the club will bounce back even stronger next season.

He said: "As for fourth place, I think we probably just drew a few too many games here and there and I think having the knowhow of turning them into victories will hopefully stand us in good stead for next year."
