Birmingham defender Roger Johnson has escaped a ban for comments he made about referee Martin Atkinson following his side's derby defeat to Aston Villa.

The 27-year-old was outraged when Atkinson decided to give a late penalty to Villa for his challenge on Gabriel Agbonlahor, despite replays showing he played for the ball.

Former Cardiff and Wycombe centre-back Johnson openly criticised the match official following the controversial derby on 25th April.

"The referee was a disgrace," said Johnson. "He's ruined the match and clearly shouldn't be doing these kind of games - it was too big for him."

After being charged by the Football Association, Johnson was fined £7,500 at a personal hearing on Tuesday and warned as to his future conduct.
