Former Aston Villa player Alan Curbishley has reportedly emerged as one of the candidates to take charge at Villa Park.

Villa are carrying out interviews this week as they look to name a replacement for Martin O'Neill following the Northern Irishman's shock departure just before the start of the new season.

Curbishley, who has been out of work since leaving West Ham two years ago, is believed to be on Villa's shortlist for the manager's job.

The 52-year-old joined Villa as a player from Birmingham in 1983 and made 36 appearances for the club.

Villa confirmed last weekend they wanted a manager with Premier League experience and Curbishley could fit the bill having impressed during a long spell at Charlton before taking over at West Ham.

Caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald, who has been in charge since O'Neill's departure, formally applied for the job on Tuesday after deciding to throw his hat into the ring for the post.

Former Benfica chief Ronald Koeman has also made it public that he would be interested in the role.

Villa are to speak to other potential candidates before making an appointment, which they hope will come before the next match at Stoke after the international break.
