Skysports.com readers are split on whether former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier would be a good choice to replace Martin O'Neill as Aston Villa manager.

Houllier, who last managed in the Premier League with Liverpool six years ago, has been strongly tipped to take over the Midlands club permanently.

Despite an impressive trophy haul for the Reds, including a League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup treble in 2001, 55.3 per cent of pollsters do not believe he would be the correct man to take over at Aston Villa; in contrast, 44.7 per cent think he has the credentials to be a success at Villa Park.

The poll reveals a divided stance, possibly attributable to the month-long reign of caretaker manager Kevin MacDonald. Since O'Neill's departure, MacDonald has steered Villa to 4th in the league - but impressive wins at home to West Ham and Everton have been tainted by a 6-0 loss to Newcastle and elimination from the Europa League to Rapid Vienna.

If Houllier is appointed, Villa fans can take solace from the fact he steered Liverpool into the Champions League three times - Aston Villa are 14/1 to finish in the Top 4 this season.

A lot of Liverpool's success under the Frenchman revolved around Steven Gerrard supplying Michael Owen with chances; his possible arrival could bring out the best in Agbonlahor and Carew, both of whom are 66/1 to be Premier League top scorer this season.

Given his success in the League Cup and FA Cup, a domestic trophy may be the most realistic target if he takes charge. Villa are 16/1 to win the FA Cup, and the same price to lift the League Cup.
